A Phenomenological Study On Childhood Verbal Abuse: Perspectives from Adults Who Receive Therapy

My name is Arletha Mark. I am a doctoral student at University of Arizona Global Campus, formerly Ashford University which is located in San Diego, California. I am conducting a research study on the perspectives of therapists who provide mental health treatment to clients who have experienced childhood verbal aggression/abuse (CVA) and on the factors that influence the development of a positive self-concept that leads some who have a history of CVA to become self-actualized and fully functioning individuals; I would like to invite you to participate.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked 5 screening questions some include whether you have provided treatment to clients who experienced CVA; if you are licensed; if you have 20 years or more experience working with the CVA population; and whether you live in the western portion of the country. I will screen you over the phone which will consist of you answering demographic questions along with the screening questionnaire. I will conduct an interview via Zoom that will be video recorded to verify my understanding of your experience. During the interview you will be asked questions about your perspectives regarding CVA and about factors that influence the development of a positive self-concept and becoming self-actualized post CVA. If you feel uncomfortable answering any of the questions, you do not have to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer. The meeting will take place at a mutually agreed upon time and should last about 60 minutes. As stated before, the interview will be videotaped on Zoom so that I can accurately transcribe what is discussed. The video will only be reviewed by me; it will be destroyed upon completion of the study.

You will receive a $5 gift card to Starbucks for participating in the study. Your gift card will be mailed to you within 7 days after the completion of your interview. Participation is voluntary and confidential. At any time during the study, you may choose to discontinue the study with no penalty. Study information will be kept in a secure location at my residence where only I have access to it. The results of the study may be published or presented at professional venues, but your identity will not be revealed and will be coded.

If you have any questions about this study, please feel free to contact me. You may contact me at 310-308-6068 or [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration. If you would like to participate, please contact me at the number listed below or email me to discuss participating.

Warm regards,
