Vanessa A. Smallsbryant, PhD is an Associate Minister at New Ashley Baptist Church in Summerville, SC, a motivational and inspirational speaker and a retired Chief Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force. She was born and reared in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from St. Andrews Parish High School. She entered the United States Marine Corps Reserves in June 1979 with training at Parris Island, SC. She completed an inter-service transfer to the United States Air Force in 1984 and retired after 30 years of active duty service in August 2013. During her career, Chief Smallsbryant has participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and deployed in support of Global War on Terrorism and Operation Enduring Freedom. She is a Wounded Warrior Alumni
Dr. Smallsbryant currently serves as chaplain, Chairperson for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully (GEMS) and Chairperson for Emergency Response for the North Charleston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was selected and elected to serve as a life-time advisor and member of the Board of Directors for the Master Sergeant Jesse Floyd Scholarship Award for Excellence in Wilmington, NC. She is a recurring guest speaker and mentor at North Charleston High School and Military Magnet Academy in Charleston, SC, charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial in Washington, DC, active member of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, American Legion Post #112 and a life-time member of Disabled American Veterans. Chief Smallsbryant has also served as guest lecturer at Headquarters Quantico Marine Corps Joint Military Senior Enlisted Academy, Quantico, VA, and at Kessler Air Force Base Protestant Women of the Chapel, Biloxi, MS. Her motivational speaking engagements have taken to various locations both domestically and internationally. The Chief’s distinctive military career includes recognition and honors as one of the US Air Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen, the recipient of the South Carolina’s Outstanding Armed Forces Member of the Year, honors by former South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley, as well as honors by the SC Senate. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education, Training and Development (Magna Cum Laude) from Southern Illinois University, dual Masters of Art degrees in Human Resource Management and Human Resource Development (Cum Laude) from Webster University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Christian Education from Liberty University
Minister Smallsbryant is highly respected as a woman after God’s own heart, whose passion is to encourage others through the preaching and teaching of God’s word to plant seeds of hope, restoration and reconciliation. She shares her life experiences to help motivate and inspire others to “pick yourself up when life’s situations or people throw you down.” She is a counselor, a teacher, a preacher, a facilitator, but most importantly, a child of God.
