To Improve Quality...

The Professional Development Committee of the National Organization of Human Services (NOHS) is seeking scholarly mini-research proposals from faculty and practitioners concerned with improving, enhancing, understanding and developing new ideas in human service education in colleges and universities. The committee fosters collaborative grant writing strategies that capitalize on the strengths of the membership and disburses research grants that are consistent with the mission of NOHS.

Research Proposals should be for projects that are not funded by the college or university and should reflect reasonable costs. Research Proposals should focus on topics of interest to human service educators including the following:

  • Curricula design
  • Teaching Methods
  • Professional Development and Experiential Learning
  • Faculty in-service training
  • Retraining/career path of graduates
  • Redeployment
  • Issues of Program Quality

Proposal Development Process and Procedures

  1. The Professional Development Committee is designated as the central clearinghouse for all research initiatives.
  2. Research initiators must submit a full proposal to the committee by May 15. Proposals should be three typewritten pages and double spaced.
  3. The Committee Chairperson will notify each research initiator within ten days confirming receipt of the proposal.
  4. Upon receipt of the research proposal, the subcommittee of the Professional Development Committee notifies each committee member in writing and completes its review within 30 days.
  5. The final recommendations, including the committee's comments, is submitted to the NOSHE Board at the summer Board Meeting.
  6. The Chairperson of the Professional Development Committee will be identified on all research proposals as the contact for award notification.
  7. Upon receipt of an award, the Chairperson of the Professional Development Committee notifies the research initiator, office of the president, regional representative, and the LINK's editor.
  8. Research initiators are responsible for writing and submitting a one-page quarterly report that is required for each research project. All progress reports and a final report must be submitted by the research initiators to the committee for review.

Note: The Committee may request additional information or clarification. In the event that proposals are sent back for revisions, all correspondence should be sent by overnight or registered return receipt mail to ensure accountability of the process.

Topics

Research Proposals can be targeted to any of the following areas:

  • Instruction: Course Syllabus and Critical Analysis; Course Outline and Extensive Reviews of Literature; and Course Folder and Portfolio Process.
  • Instructional Support and Materials: Field Trip Request Methods and Prior Learning; The Role of Work Study Students; The Use of Instructional Supplies and Equipment.
  • Educational Delivery System: Telecourses; Independent Study; Individual Study; Cooperative Education/Internship; Field Experience Courses; Establishing an Experimental and/or Innovative Teaching Mode.
  • Instructional Computing: Acquisition of Academic Software; Acquisition or Modification of Academic Computing Equipment and Services; Introduction to New Technology.
  • Evaluation and Promotion of Faculty: Issues Related to Faculty Evaluation and Promotion.
