The Value of Networking

Your network of professional colleagues will grow exponentially with your NOHS membership -- through conferences, special events and exclusive online resources. These contacts are invaluable in staying up to date on issues vital to human service education and practice.

For Educators

NOHS educators offer human services and social work programs at the community college, undergraduate and graduate levels. All those programs feature a significant service-learning and internship component, delivered in close partnership with community agencies. Human service educators also do research in effective teaching and training as well as effective practice, and often collaborate with community professionals in those endeavors.

For Practitioners

Membership in NOHS creates the opportunity for you to network with professionals from many disciplinary backgrounds who share a common goal of addressing both individual and community needs within the human services area. This diversity creates an opportunity for professional growth regardless of whether you are new to the field or a human services pioneer.

Because human services has a strong base in local communities, NOSHE actively supports separate regional organizations across the country. These regional organizations offer separate annual conferences to address the distinct needs within each region, while also interfacing with the national organization through participation on the national board.

For Students

Student members find an affiliation that helps them form their identities as human service professionals, regardless of the area of human services they eventually aspire to work in. Working jointly with with the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, NOHS recently launched the first phase of a new credentialing program for human service workers, and the involvement of practitioners is crucial to the success of this endeavor.

Advance Your Career with NOHS

Whether you are an educator, practitioner or student, NOHS’s broad range of benefits provide the mix of services that will strengthen your career.

  • Increased awareness of both the problems and solutions within human services. This awareness translates into better service to your students and/or clients. Special contributions to the field of human services are recognized with NOHS awards presented at the annual conference. These awards, for members only, can prove the value of your NOHS membership to your institution.
  • Identification with a large group of dedicated professionals. Because NOHS membership has grown over the past two years we have a broader base of human service professionals to learn from and turn to for assistance. Your membership will further increase our capabilities to serve your needs.
  • Substantial discounts on registration to the annual conference and pre-conference workshops. The 2007 annual conference is currently being planned for November in Atlanta, Georgia. Continuing Education Units will be available.
  • Subscription to Human Service Education Journal. Published each fall, the Journal is increasing its reach into educational and practice topics. The 2004 issue featured eight research articles and two book reviews. (Read more about the Journal.)
  • Quarterly newsletter The Link. One of the primary connections among NOHS members, the Link is published in March, June, September and December. The March 2005 issue focused on "Currents in Human Service Education," featuring five articles. (Read more about The Link.)
  • Affiliation with one of the six regional organizations associated with NOHS. The six regional organizations are Mid-Atlantic, Mid West/North Central, New England, Northwest, Southern and Western organizations. (Read more about NOHS Regional Organizations.)
